THE SPIRIT AND TECHNIQUE BEHIND THE JEWELRY
The Balinese believe that to create art and craft is to celebrate and give thanks to the spiritual world. Every element in Suarti's designs is infused with powerful meaning - like the Tulang Naga design which represents the skeleton of a snake with a dragon's head - a symbol of mystical power and postive energy, or the Borobudur design taken from the ancient temple of the same name in Java, or even the flower motifs that represent the beautiful blessed flowers one wears in their hair while in Bali. "The Balinese believe that all elements of your life are woven together, I try to represent that in my designs," explained Suarti.
"There are shells in Bali that look like they have beading - like the granulation in the jewelry," said Suarti, referring to an ancient method of jewelry making where small pieces of silver are heated until they pop into perfect silver beads. Each bead is placed on the jewelry by hand, only the artisans of Bali, who Suarti relies upon to realize her designs, do this granulation technique. "Although I have many inspirations, many of my designs begin as original works of art sketched on paper," she explained. "I give my drawings to the most talented artisans of Bali and Java, who create it from the highest quality silver and gems" |
